Having been practised for over 25 years and used successfully to treat several million patients worldwide, refractive surgery is proven to get results.
The treatment can help anyone who suffers from corneal refractive errors (such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia). In theory, any glasses-wearer can benefit from refractive surgery, but patients are assessed by surgeons on a case-by-case basis depending on the severity of the refractive error and most importantly the condition of the cornea and the rest of the eye.
The surgery involves reshaping the cornea, either by flattening it out or by making it more curved depending on the vision problem to be corrected. The procedure is quick, precise and painless.
Refractive surgery is carried out at our centres in Lausanne, Neuchâtel and Lindberg by a highly qualified medical team made up of several internationally renowned surgeons as well as optometrists who specialise in this field.
Our centres are equipped with cutting-edge technology including the state-of-the-art surgical platforms Wavelight and MEL90, designed by the companies Alcon and Zeiss. Recognised as the fastest, most precise and most advanced laser technologies available today, these platforms enable surgeons to correct all kinds of visual disorders such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.
Femto-LASIK is the most commonly used technique. In less than ten seconds per eye, a corneal flap (of around 100 µm) is created using the FS200 laser. Once this flap has been lifted, the EX500 laser reshapes the cornea with extreme precision. It takes just 1.4 seconds to correct a myopic error of one dioptre of myopia. An infra-red camera linked to the laser ensures that the laser is always positioned correctly, even when small eye movements occur. The LASIK technique is painless and allows patients to return to their normal activities the day after surgery.
The PRK technique is recommended when the cornea is too thin or when the patient practises extreme sports. The corneal epithelium (the surface layer of the cornea) is mechanically removed. Then the cornea is reshaped using the EX500 laser. After the procedure it takes patients a week, on average, to return to their normal activities.
The management protocol consists of two preoperative appointments.
The first preoperative consultation lasts half an hour and is performed by an optometrist. The latter carries out a series of examinations and a comprehensive sight test. He/she is also able to answer all your questions.
The second preoperative consultation lasts about 1 hour and is carried out by your ophthalmic surgeon. At this point, you will receive all the necessary information for your operation, including postoperative instructions. We will have to dilate your pupils with eye drops, which will induce blurred vision for several hours. Therefore, it is essential to come accompanied as driving will not be possible.
Note: These examinations and the surgical procedure will require you to remove your lenses beforehand. The withdrawal times before each appointment and before the operations are as follows:
The outpatient operation lasts approximately 30 minutes. The laser treatment takes approximately two times 1 minute per eye. You will then remain under observation for half an hour. Please come accompanied for the return trip home. At home, we recommend lying down for a few hours with your eyes closed.
